The Importance of Stretching and it’s effects on the body

If you are not a manual therapist and not a trainer, there’s a big possibility that the stretches you preform are’nt being done right. You can get more understanding about your body’s ability to stretch with massage therapist.  Stretches are the slow, gentle, sustained lengthening of a muscle group (or specific muscle) performed by moving the muscle insertion away from its origin to extend the muscle to its fullest range. Stretches should be within the client’s limits of flexibility.

For myofascial release stretching technique, the target is the dis-function on a joint, so all the muscles around, involved in the action is on the stretch schedule.

There are essentially 7 types of stretching:

  1. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF).
  2. Dynamic Stretching.
  3. Active Stretching.
  4. Myofascial Release.
  5. Ballistic Stretching.
  6. Functional Stretching.
  7. Static Stretching.

The Benefits of Massage Therapy

To me, massage therapy has so many benefits for the body, that regular massage weekly or monthly is a must-be-done routine.  If there is knee pain or neck pain, I would take a massage, and stretching over anything else. But for you I will be very convincing about the necessity of massage. The purpose of massage therapy is to target the source of the body’s pain through releasing muscular tension, increasing flexibility as a whole. Below are some of the most impressive effects that massage has on the body.

  1. It reduces Stress. When the body is under stress or if the body has gone into a fight or flight mode, the body produces a hormone called adrenaline. If this hormone is not used up in the fight or flight process, the body turns it into cortisol. Cortisol is responsible for a list of Health ailments. Problems that are directly associated with this hormone include headaches, weight gain, digestive problems, and insomnia.
  2. Over time it changes the body. Regular or routine massages over extended periods of time have been known to increase energy levels, reduce swelling, pain, and stimulate on the emotional and physical levels.
  3. Normalizes blood pressure. Massage therapy sessions reduce high blood pressure. In fact, long-term independent studies show that a consistent massage therapy treatment plan can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. It can also reduce unhealthy cortisol levels. Decreasing  hostility, depression, anxiety, and tension. In fact, lower blood pressure can also reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and/or kidney failure, as well, as numerous other health issues.
  4. Relaxes overused hyper toned  muscles and promotes muscle relaxation
  5. Increases circulation. Massage also promotes circulation to the affected or injured area, which brings oxygen and nutrients to the affected muscle and eliminates cells waste products. Increased activity to the affected sites have been proven to reduce edema (swelling) and stiffness in the muscles and joints, as well, as increase flexibility to help reduce pain*
  6. Release of Endorphins. This form of therapy also releases endorphins (pain-killing hormones) , which boost the dopamine and serotonin levels in the body* These hormones assist the body to heal, pain management, and calms the nerves*
